Meet The Method

Mokume Gane

Mokume-Gane is a traditional Japanese metallurgy technique that involves the layering and fusing of metals. The name literally  translates to Eye of Wood (woodgrain) Metal and as the name suggests, when the metal is properly processed it creates stunning layers and designs that indeed appears as the natural grain of wood. Depending on the process and tools used, each pattern can be absolutely unique.

The process of creating a Mokume slab – or billet – differs from typical metallurgy methods because it does not yield an alloy and the layers are not adhered with solder or other binding agents. Rather, each layer remains pure and is fused to one another using high heat and pressure to ensure a strong and stable bond. The resulting billet can then be processed and used for virtually anything since the metal can be hammered, cut, rolled and formed.

Vision

Anything that can be practiced is, at its core, an art. The more one develops their art, the better they begin to understand themselves and the world around them.

Mission

NL Studio strives to put the vision of practiced art into action in order to transcend the realm of monotonous labor: each project is another step closer to reaching that goal.
